As someone who was also in a cult for most of my childhood, I appreciate hearing the experiences of others like me. It confirms all the red flags that I myself had also noticed even as a teenager. Although the hosts are funny and keep poking fun at each other, their interviews of the survivors...Read full review »

Love this show! I’ve been hooked from the beginning.

Eh
Pretty good content if you can get past all the cringe banter. Liz always sounds wasted. Someone really needs to tell podcast hosts to practice their comedy act outside of their podcasts. The Body of Christ Church episode gets super obnoxious. I should have known it would be painful when the...Read full review »

I’ve listened to this podcast since the beginning and it just gets better and better. Love Tyler even more after the episode where he tells us all about his experiences in a cult. Liz snd Tyler are the best , funny, engaging and empathetic which makes for the perfect concoction that this podcast...Read full review »

I always look forward to the latest episode of Was I in A Cult each week. The resilience and strength of the guests is truly incredible. I admire the guests so much and appreciate Liz and Tyler’s lighthearted approach.

I like the format a lot - it’s informative while being entertaining. I love hearing from the people instead of hearing about them.

I’ve listened to this on and off for as long as it’s been out - I know I can always come to this show for genuine and thoughtful conversation about cults and the human experience. I was motivated to write a review after listening to Tyler’s own story - thank you for sharing. Your story is so full...Read full review »

I’m struck not only by Tyler and Liz’s (amazing!) humor but more so by their thoughtfulness and empathy. So glad I found this podcast!!!

I’ve learned A LOT about cults from this podcast. I like real stories but I would rather laugh than cry so this podcast is a perfect blend of that. After hearing about Tyler’s Morman experience it’s made me think differently about the 2 American kids I see on a mission in my UK town. I think...Read full review »

I want to like this pod. I really do. The stories that the guests share are important. It’s far easier than most people think to find yourself in a place where life becomes so overwhelming that it feels “right” to give up control to some charismatic megalomaniac. The editing is so, so, SO off...Read full review »

Liz & Tyler, the intent of your subject is so very important, please hold back on the interruptions, self talk, especially the damned clips from those book of morons movie imps caterwauling the same inane tune over and over again. I almost deleted the connection to your podcast on that one...Read full review »

I’d have to say that I’ve never laughed at one of Liz’s or Tyler’s jokes (sorry guys, too immature), I do appreciate listening to the guests laughing at the absurdity of what they’re saying as they’re telling their story. Truth is stranger than fiction sometimes! What great, inspiring guests....Read full review »

Hey Tyler!! Listening to your story right now and I live in Red Oak, Iowa. How many other listeners are from the area?! Love the podcast!

Why is an anti-cult podcast allowing Bodi, an MLM, advertise on their show? This company, formally known as beach body, is widely regarded as a cult by reps who have left the company. This is so odd to me.

I listen to a bunch of other cult pods but this is quickly becoming a favorite. At first, I was surprised at the humor with such serious topics. A lot of cults take themselves so GD serious but Liz and Tyler bring us some levity.

Really wanted to like this show but too many bad jokes from the presenters making it difficult to listen too. Want to here the cult stuff but it takes a back seat to presenters wanting to hear themselves and attempting to be funny and upselling their subscription

Really funny show. Which is weird to say because the topic of cults is pretty heavy. Somehow this podcast and the hosts (Tyler and Liz) are able to present these horrible cult stories with a lot of compassion and a lot of humor. These stories need to be told and healing occurs through the telling...Read full review »

I appreciate the humor and compassion shown by the hosts and the amazing stories the guests share. Their vulnerability is moving. I especially felt honored to hear Steve Hassan’s poetry. He’s good! You know, besides being the oft referenced expert on Cults. Thanks guys!

Hands down, this is my favorite podcast right now. The hosts create a perfect balance between witty, funny banter/chatter while still focusing on the guests who share their stories. Great guests on the show with epic and heroic stories. Don’t love the hosts’ style. Mean spirited banter and gendered stereotype joking is not my jam — their humor is a touch blue/adolescent (fart jokes, making fun of meth users not having teeth, etc). Was I In a Cult is one of my absolute favorite podcasts. …. And you realize it was just too much, you’re probably right. I grew up in a very culty level of church ministry. They never meant for it to be that way, it just turns into one. LOVED last season, hate this season. The snarky/funny comments were great before, but it’s just too much now. While this podcast is generally well researched and relays fairly factual events of cults and religions, there is a huge flaw; the condescension is unbearable. Great show. LIZ READ THIS Liz being “annoyed” with Tyler’s love of music is more annoying than his love of music. It was mildly amusing in season one. But it’s gotten old. He’s a typical white man. But you’re a typical white woman so it cancels out.
