“Kudos to Marie Fisher in being articulate and forthright about her choice from a young age to be childfree. She really nails it about the label “selfish” - that we are all selfish on some level or another. People who choose to have children generally say “I wanted to...” - so selfish isn’t something to be denied or disdained. I had different reasons and family background than Marie but having kids was never part of my personal scenario either. Like her I have always participated in the community and am a seasoned volunteer. Not a small number of my efforts have focused on women’s rights and children’s causes. There are so many reasons women and children do not have an equal playing field or healthy environments or viable options - one does not have to have a child in order to have a positive impact on these issues. Bringing one more person into the world - for all the reasons Marie mentions from economics to the environment - doesn’t really solve much in the big picture. Still as she says the operative principle is that women should have the choice to bear a child or not - and all choices should be honored equally. Finally as Marie states, being a role model is important. When I started to get older I felt the same - that women should have the same range of choices as men. I frequently tell younger women it is fine to be married or have a family or both but if they are doing all the sacrificing, there’s something wrong with that picture. Great interview on an important topic.”
