Momma-bird Slate Regurgitates The News
“The problem with the news today?” It’s poorly researched, omits facts, and is delivered with a progressive interpretation for white-collar progressives. “It’s everywhere.” And it all says the same thing— what you want to hear. “And each day it can feel like we’re mindlessly scrolling.” It really all about feelings, isn’t it? Consider the toxic masculine trait called ‘self-control’ when you find yourself mindlessly scrolling through HuffPo think pieces about tampons. “It’s why we created What Next.” How generous of you. Your generosity comes without advertising and is hosted by a person of color, because you care, right? “This short daily show is here to help you make sense of things.” Golly, thanks, Slate. For a moment there I thought I’d have to think for myself. But here you are to do my thinking for me. Hugs!! “When the news feels overwhelming,..” And you’re fresh out of your anxiety meds... “we’re here to help you answer: What next?” They just want to help. They’re helpers. A hive mind of earnest helpers who want to diversify their income with side projects selling ad spots on podcasts telling you what to think about that awful orange man they were absolutely certain could not win. Not all their predictions about ‘What’s Next’ are accurate, but who’s counting?? “Look for new episodes every weekday morning.” One more inane ‘news’ source to scroll past. I’ll pass, thanks.

Easy to digest info on big headlines that really need some more nuance then the headlines themselves can offer. Hope to listen for far more then just the planned limited run.

I'm listen to a lot of podcasts, including The Daily (NYT) and Today Explained (Vox). This is Slate's verison of a daily 20 minute story using in-house (and sometimes other) reporters to go beyond the headlines on the news. I love the format (short) and I look forward to What Next as much...Read full review »
