About two years ago right after my fiancé and I moved in together, I was telling my brother that I had only seen my fiancé drunk 5 times in our then 10 year relationship, but sometimes, he gets really tired from his stressful job and slurs his words and falls asleep on the couch. My brother casually said, if he looks drunk and acts drunk, he's probably drunk. In that moment, my world snapped into place.
Growing up in a house with a parent that didn't drink, I had no idea what it looked like.
At that point, I started seeing it. Chugging from the bottle when he thought I wasn't looking. However, still being naive, I made excuses. Total denial.
Two months ago, I found out he was cheating. He said it was because he was drinking and making bad choices. He wanted to start going to church. Because I wanted to believe him, I stayed.
The drinking got worse.
I started listening to your pod cast last week, listened to them all, and I can no longer deny he is an alcoholic.
Today, I called my family and canceled my wedding. Still working on the vendors.
He is devastated but still in denial. I hope this pushes him to get help.
Right now, he is crying at the end of the bed, but when the song changes and I hear some of it, he just keeps talking about how I am abandoning him. Him.him.him
