“Thank you for this podcast. I listened to it while driving through Missouri recently, a trip that gave me the opportunity to visit Rocky Ridge. I highly recommend a visit there, as it has so many great artifacts from Laura’s life. Seeing her hand stitched monogrammed apron still hanging on a hook in the kitchen was a treat. As a mother, I had to chuckle. She didn’t like sewing, but she did master it, and there’s some amazing examples of her handiwork there.
I’ve enjoyed the context you provide, especially the author interviews. Thanks for those and for the show notes. I’m deep into Prairie Fires currently. I am sad to realize that back in the 1960s when I first read these books, we were all still pretty oblivious to the insensitive and sometimes downright racist parts of these books. I have been thinking about it, and I think from my perspective, I’d like to see a version of the books that are edited to make them appropriate for young children AND a version that preserves the original along with some commentary setting them in the context of the times in which they were written. I realize this may be an unpopular opinion, but it’s mine, so do with it what you will.
Reading the Little House books actually helped to lead me to a really rewarding career in historic preservation and history museums. Teaching history through story is so inspiring to children. It certainly was for me.
Thanks for the great work on this!”
