“I loved the Little House series. When I became a parent, I read the books over again with my oldest child. Then I was horrified by how close the Ingalls family had come to disaster on more than one occasion. As a child, I loved The Long Winter, because it was a heroic story. The family had stuck together in extreme adversity. As an adult, I realized that the entire town had nearly starved to death. I was horrified.
The podcast addresses the difference between the childhood experience with the books and the adult view. It also goes into the question of Rose Wilder Lane’s role in creating the books. There’s so much that’s covered on the series.
I came away with new respect for Michael Landon’s work on the TV series. It was impressive to find out that the show was so widely viewed.
Now I’m pondering how the Little House books should fit into children’s literature today. How do we keep the magic of the story while acknowledging the dark side of the westward movement in the United States?”
