Execution let me down
Our family loves podcasts. We listen for education, entertainment, while traveling and to supplement areas of study. With 4 children between the ages of 4 and 11, we enjoy many of the high quality learning podcasts available (like Brains On). I was excited for this new youth-focused science offering from NPR. Our family has listened to the first couple of episodes and have pretty mixed feelings. The information is great, the formatting is well done, however, the aspect that keeps chafing is the limiting, unfortunate gender dynamic between Guy and Mindy. He is the calm, male figure that teaches (reinforcing an authority dynamic), and she comes across as silly, frivolous, ditzy and flippant. I imagine this was designed to create a mood of fun and engagement, but the overall feel is a male scientist teaching a silly girl who doesn't understand, doesn't fully engage, and doesn't really mind that state of affairs. Please note - I am not saying that the female lead IS any of these things, but the role she plays in this podcast highlights these attributes. Your target audience is children interested in science and this interactive style seems to dumb down the role and value of women in science. With as much effort, investment and research going into reinforcing women in STEM fields, I feel like the current interplay between the moderators is a step backwards. My children don't need more examples of women playing dumb to entertain or appease men, especially in professional or academic realms. They need strong female examples of learning, earnest inquiry, study and engagement. Humor and fun is powerful and appropriate at this age and in this pursuit - but the current dynamic with these hosts is quite unbalanced and unfortunate.Read full review »

We have been excitedly awaiting this podcast to share our love of science and NPR with our young daughters. The concepts are interesting and the production is well done, but Mindy's "character" comes across as utterly vapid. It's more than distracting, it's disappointing. It...Read full review »

I am a father of 2 daughters and I will not be sharing this podcast with them. How come the female host cannot be just as smart as the male host? Where does the need to make the female (or any host) play stupid come from? The show can be very funny with 2 smart, intelligent hosts. Very...Read full review »
