“There is a lot to like about this podcast and I mean A LOT. If you go back over previous seasons, there is a treasure trove of good information about story structure and character development, etc. The short format means there isn't much "instruction" going on. Rather, the podcast tends to hit the major ideas of a topic so that they can percolate in your head. It's also easy to use the podcast as a springboard to do further research which, let's be honest, if you are serious about writing, you would need to do anyway.
In terms of conversation flow, Mary is the MVP of this podcast. Hers is the most pithy and relevant advice and instruction. She also tends to avoid tangents and keeps the conversation on track. In general, some of the comments are not very helpful though. For example, Howard illustrates a web comic set in space. So when he jumps in to talk about space ships and explosions, it's not as useful for writers who work in other genres and more conventional mediums. When he talks about plot structure and character development, though, he clearly knows what he is talking about.
The most recent season (11) is not so great. That is especially the case when compared to season 10. So it's not a good place to start if you want to get a good sense of the podcast. Start with season 10 and work backwards toward season six (when Mary joined the podcast).”Read full review »
