31st Sutra Chapter 2
Yamas are the great, mighty, universal vows, not limited by class, place, time, or circumstance.
Nonviolence and the other yamas must be practiced at all times,
in all conditions, everywhere, irrespective of any considerations whatsoever.

जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमा महाव्रतम्
jatideshakalasamayanavachchhinnah sarvabhauma mahavratam
• jati - class
• desha - place
• kala - time
• samaya - circumstance
• anavachchhinnah - universal
• sarva-bhauma - universal
• maha-vratam - great vow.

जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमा महाव्रतम्॥२.३१॥
जाति , देश , काल , समय , अनवच्छिन्नाः , सार्वभौमा: , महाव्रतम्
• जाति - (उक्त यम) जाति
• देश - देश
• काल - काल (और)
• समय - विशेष नियम (की)
• अनवच्छिन्नाः - सीमा से रहित (और)
• सार्वभौमा: - सब अवस्थाओं में पालन करने योग्य
• महाव्रतम् - महाव्रत कहलाते हैं ।
उक्त यम जाति, देश, काल और विशेष नियम की सीमा से रहित और सब अवस्थाओं में पालन करने योग्य महाव्रत कहलाते हैं ।
