She faced many life trials starting with an arrest at age 7 during a protest for open housing, faced racial discrimination in high school, lost her mom to brain cancer, lost her dad years later as he was murder in his shop, and battled breast cancer. She has been inducted into the Omaha Black Musicians Hall of Fame as well as the Nebraska Musicians Hall of Fame.
