“This podcast gets a ton of accolades for being an early, trailblazing example of the history podcast format. However, I wasn't nearly as impressed as a lot of others. While the quality and writing and production are all unimpeachable, the podcast is a prime example of the problems with the "Great Man" style of history. Brownworth frequently offers concluding evaluations of Byzantine rulers that often seem wildly at odds with the evidence he presented in the episodes.
A great listen for fans of Byzantium, Orthodoxy, the history of Christianity, or podcasting history, but certainly not as essential for podcast fans as it is made out to be.”Read full review »
