“I stumble across your podcast and absolutely love it! I have Schizo-Affective Disorder (oddly enough, a combo of BP and Schizophrenia - good times, let me tell ya)
I just listened to the Stigma podcast and I can not tell you how many times I have ended up in the hospital only to have to fight to be there beacuse I was told - no lie - I was "too intelligent to be there." it didn't matter I had cut myself and attempted suicide, nope they didn't really care. The problem was I was able to tell them what was going on, what my hallucinations where that had casue the self-harm (still remember it, was one of my worst ever hallucination episodes.) But because I was able to tell them, even drew pictures and explain it - I was cast aside! I spent 2 days on the ward, I think just to appease me.
Everything you talked about was totally true and has happened to me, I am a photographer, writer and blogger and I have been told way to many times that I can't possibly be as ill as I say! Do they not realize the correlation between mental illness and creativity? I actually had an Art Therapist, one of the last times I was hospitalized, ask me to put together some writings and photos for her art show she was doing at the hospital.
Wanna have some real fun with people? Tell them you have had ECT! (I have, 3 rounds) Words can not explain what will happen next!
