Yet another “self help” con man. Great that this person was exposed but as others have said, he will probably reinvent himself and do it all again, maybe in another jurisdiction. The victims are brave to speak out and I hope that they will eventually recover from the damage inflicted on their...Read full review »

Brava to the team for this diligently and compassionately researched series. It’s so sad to me that there are no real consequences for this “leader”’s criminality or that of his enablers, how ever groomed they have been. Very sad for the families whose loved ones are still stuck and may not return.

Great reporting. The story really drew me in . The reporter brought the story to fantastic conclusion. I recommend you give it a listen.

Definitely binge-worthy! Appreciated learning some new info about the topic. Like so many (if not most) life coach scammers it involves an almost hard to believe history. Still trying to figure out what makes it so “very British” though, because as the producer says, this could (if it hasn’t...Read full review »

Be eh fascinating and well reported but I think it was misnamed as the cult leader was actually South African! I am South African myself and found it really cool to hear a bit about his background in Durban from a different perspective. The whole show was really good.

Well researched and very engaging. I don’t understand the complaints about the title. It’s an expose on a cult based in UK. Excellent. Binged all the episodes. Healing to all who left and hopefully will leave in the future.

Such a wonderfully researched podcast. People think cults are more like the Manson Family or Jim Jones’ cult but this group hit all of the signs of a cult. Interesting!

This was a well researched, thought provoking and balanced podcast. I was gripped the entire time and could not believe what I was hearing. Excellent investigative journalism at its best.

Hopefully this chap has had some de programming help. I’m so sorry that he’s been through that. Must get counselling as these people come back and reinvent themselves. People like Paul never go away. He will recreate himself and it will take another 15years before anyone can shut him down again! He will go and hide in a country that won’t have the same checks. He has perfected the art of domination, bullying and mind control. Unfortunate for those he will...Read full review »

Hats off to those who came forward about this scam They have shown strength and integrity far greater than Waugh gave them credit for. We all think we would not be duped but as this scam shows, anything is possible.

Great title - and so good to be reminded that not all cults are religious. Very much a cult of our time where “life Improvement - coaching is so topical. Well done for sticking with it, making the podcast and for opening our eyes again - to how easily things can go more than pear- shaped!

Great podcast, but why’d you pick that title? What about this is “very British” beyond the accents? It’s a basic confidence scam, run in every country in the world. Would’ve been more useful and impactful to call it “How Paul Waugh / Lighthouse Scammed People Out of Their Money.”

The narrator has one of the most annoying voices I have ever experienced in my ten years of being a podcast addict. I find certain podcasts difficult to listen to because of vocal expression and difficult presentation. The content of this podcast is fascinating, I binged the entire thing and...Read full review »

A really good podcast. Pity the BBC didn’t research closer to home. These are the exact same tactics used by Tigrent Learning several years ago, a group run by the BBCs own Martin Roberts from Homes Under the Hammer. Eight episodes that I expected to listed to over a couple of weeks. It took a couple of days. A painful story told with compassion, and a searing gaze at the monster, Paul Waugh.

This is just amazing, good work done as you address this. Wow! Have you looked into the Aftermath Foundation? Created by former Scientologists. The cadence, the depth, the silences , the content, the humanity; exposing sociopathic, megalomaniacal thief & opportunist extraordinaire Paul Waugh. If you meet him, run, & don’t look back.

A very English cult is well worth the listen and it’s shocking to know this exists in England where English people are victims.

Proof of what a fraud Waugh is: he’s taken a page directly out of Scientology. It’s remarkable how similar Lighthouse is. From the recordings (auditing in Scientology) to the retribution enacted to those who leave the cult or question/investigate them. Loved this podcast, very well constructed...Read full review »

Incredible story told by a fantastic investigative journalist. I hadn’t heard of this organisation before but it’s extremely concerning for vulnerable people, particularly in this post-truth world we live in.

I listened to this in one sitting, which I never do, and was fascinated. I’m a South African living in Johannesburg and it was strange to hear that accent and sad to hear Paul’s deception and delusion. We’ll done to those who’ve got out and going the rest get out too.
