“…is like nails on a chalkboard. I’ve long wondered why non-professional podcasters and YouTubers don’t do just enough voice training to ensure that they’re easy to listen to.
I enjoyed (if that’s the right word) Horn’s book on people loving dead Jews. It’s long overdue, well written, etc. Have recommended it to others. And I like what she offers here. But when the voices of guests on the show feel like a relief from the harsh tones of the main speaker, it’s a problem.
From Horn’s high, almost screechy vocal upper range to her volume, compared to those of her guests, it’s just painful.
Absolutely nothing personal about this, just begging for Horn to take a few lessons. Slow it down slightly, relax the throat, etc. You don’t have to yell. We hear you. That’s why we’re tuning in. Passion is great; shouting is not.
And have an engineer or experienced amateur equalize the levels. That’s pretty basic, tbh.
In case anyone wonders: I’m Jewish from NYC. So were my parents and grandparents. I know all about NYC-area Jewish speech habits. Some of my relatives, etc…. But they never did radio appearances.
I also earned an MA in History, have conducted many classes, and have made lots of presentations. You don’t have to be boring or speak with a monotone. God forbid.
You don’t have to sound trained. In fact, it’s better if you don’t. But please, file the edges off the voice. You’ll attract and retain more listeners.”
