compelling and unsettling
After hearing the first two episodes, I could describe this podcast as a compelling true-crime drama, and worth binge-listening for the careful yet unsettling way its narrative unfolds. And it is so much more. Liz Flock is asking us to put our personal belief systems at risk and to re-think our understanding of “safety” and “violence” under conditions of unthinkable abuse. When a police detective assesses Deven, the story’s central character, as lacking empathy following the death of her brutal boyfriend, Flock observes, “Women get criticized, no matter how they sound. The thing is, in abnormal situations, people behave in abnormal ways.“ As I listen, I have to question my own ordinary sense of morality, and be open to difficult nuances of human behavior and social justice. It’s not easy, and I look forward to the next chapter.

It is so difficult to listen to episode 2. Heartbreaking. This detective is making me sick to my stomach. I can’t believe how dismissive he is of her account of the incident. No investigation whatsoever.
