A splendid feast of nuance and detail
I am not a scholar, but of all the historical podcasts I’ve accessed, this is the one I find most compelling. Here you get to hear real scholars talk shop about a rich field of study that has historically been marginalized out of mainstream textbooks and popular histories. No topic here is treated cavalierly or oversimplified; at the same time, the subject is discussed in an accessible manner that any reasonably well-educated non-specialist can follow. And Anthony is an enthusiastic and personable host with a dry sense of humor. Of course, I was already hooked on the Eastern Roman Empire. But hopefully, fora like this will generate more widespread awareness of and appreciation for this field.

Detailed episodes, like the one on Attaleiates, are a fun...Read full review »
