It was really cool listening to the late Bob Ousterhout discuss the history of the Hagia Sophia within the context of the wider religious and political landscape up to the present day.

I listen to a lot of history podcasts and almost all of them (naturally) focus on describing events and underlying causes. Heard Anthony interviewed on History of Byzantium and his insights and depth are amazing. I really enjoy this podcast because he interviews other historians on “topics”...Read full review »

Some of the best scholars out there writing today! What a learned and important resource for teaching, as well.

Kaldellis is an excellent host and his podcast delves into all sorts of historical categories that we aren’t usually exposed to. Listening to Byzantium and Friends, I feel that I am learning not just about History, but about the Past and Humanity. My favorite episode is the Byzantine Ghost Stories

I’m really enjoying this - has a huge range of topics, all very interesting, mostly interviews with an expert on that subject.

I wound up here thanks to Robin Pierson’s History of Byzantium, and I’m glad I did! Despite majoring in history in college, I never knew much about the Byzantine world—but I’ve enjoyed taking a deep dive into its history thanks to Dr. Kaldellis. I have heard few people that combine his level of...Read full review »

Fantastic podcast, thank you. My fav question in the end of the conversation. Why have you decided to drop it? I am binging at episode 40 and surprised that Robin Pearson hasn’t been mentioned and not recommended yet. Not fair.

I’ve been away from Byz. studies for many years, and this podcast feels like coming home. Thank you!

I don’t remember studying about Byzantium in school (although I did learn about Constantine). I became interested 20 years ago when I traveled to Turkey. I felt the significance of the location the moment I arrived and wondered why I was so ignorant of its place in history. Luckily, we had a tour...Read full review »

Anthony Kaldellis is a great byzantinist! And this podcast is a wonderful tool for a student of the medieval west, such as myself, to get to know the byzantine world. Much recommended.

Ever since I started playing Paradox Grand Strategy games, such as the Crusader Kings series, my interest in history has expanded exponentially. What a fabulous discussion about the future of the humanities both in the US and Britain. As a non-academic it made me sad to learn that higher education is increasingly being governed by market forces rather than by the love of learning. And a special thanks to all those adjuncts out there who...Read full review »

This podcast’s approach, essentially book discussions with scholars, is perfect for scholars in adjacent fields who don’t know as much about Byzantine studies as they should

I am not a scholar, but of all the historical podcasts I’ve accessed, this is the one I find most compelling. Here you get to hear real scholars talk shop about a rich field of study that has historically been marginalized out of mainstream textbooks and popular histories. I came to this podcast from Robin Piersons awesome „History of Byzantium“ - and what a disappointment!
