Just listen.

I adore listening to Tim Hartford. He maintains the British love of and respect for, language. I feel sorry for him when he has to deal with guests who are unable to speak as articulately. Specifically Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds who felt the need to say “like” at least three times in every...Read full review »

I found the latest show (George washington’s death) to be in very poor taste. Your show usually treats personal suffering with respect and tries to extract a lesson worth learning from that suffering. I did not see any of those elements in this show. Please, no more like this.
freakonalain via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 11/19/23
Truly brilliant! Tim Hartford takes a topic that sounds mundane & turns it into a tale that is truly engaging & so very interesting! Love every episode!

There are a small number of shows which are chat based which I don’t consider very interesting or worth listening to. However, the vast majority of them are exceptionally well written, well presented. They are full of interesting information and leave you thinking about the repercussions long...Read full review »

I love cautionary tales, but had to switch this episode off. I always feel a good podcast is where the presenters take second fiddle to the story. Tim is a consummate professional in this regard … but the couple of clowns on this episode made it unbearable to listen to.
Portavadie via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 11/17/23
Tim and his team create a wonderful storytelling show that is both highly entertaining and educational. I can’t stop listening to the many cautionary tales and absorbing all I can so I can use it in my life. Thank you for creating such a magnificent podcast!

As a doctor and human factors enthusiast/advocate, I find many lessons in this podcast applicable to my sphere of work. The recent interview with Former Chief of the Osage Nation, Jim Roan Gray was in a different category. The eloquence, wisdom and humanity of the man. And thoughtful...Read full review »

Always informative. The recent episodes about the murders of the Osage Nation members are the best, especially the conversation with former Principal Chief Jim Roan Gray. (Chief Roan makes an excellent point at the end about which people needs to do the learning. Thank you for publishing that...Read full review »

Heart-breaking history. All those beautiful, noble people killed for what? Money? A whole community conspired to kill them. I have no words to describe my horror at the level of lawlessness and betrayal.

Enjoyed what I listened to of this podcast in the past, but have been hearing a lot of ads for it on other podcasts lately.

I listen to all kinds of history podcasts and many of them are excellent, but this one is in a class by itself. I have heard some of the stories told in Cautionary Tales, but this podcast does it better. If history were taught this way, it would be the most popular subject in school.

I have been a serious fan of the Cautionary tales stories since the beginning and still love them. The mystic and cozy vibe makes me feel like I am sitting by a warm fire listening to a story, but as of late the experiments with the cautionary questions and conversations are just not that...Read full review »

Show is mostly commercials. They legitimately need to cut about 80% of the commercials. At a guess, I’d say it’s less show than intro/outro and commercials. Pretty brutal.
Seven Ish via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 10/02/23
The conversation shows are bad and here’s why; the host is witty but not a quick wit. The scripted episodes have been edited so that they are entertaining. The conversation shows are just dry boring drivel. I’d rather listen to someone discuss insurance policies.

Are used to be one of my favorites, now I breeze right through it and my feet, because I just don’t like the interview format. When you continue with complete episodes, hopefully I can rendezvous back…

This is the podcast I get most excited for when a new episode comes out. You can always expect a very well researched and wonderfully produced story from Tim.

Cautionary Tales is the perfect sandwich of entertaining and interesting.... robust and complex flavors delivered in a warm, friendly nutritious package. It is by far my favorite podcast.

He states his bias by calling the Supreme Court “INSANE”. Also manipulates the facts of a TV show he assumes Samuel Alito grew up watching. A law man shooting a suspect isn’t classified as a murder for per capita shootings. Not really interested in the opinion of a foreigner on the U.S....Read full review »

Malcolm Gladwell‘s recent episode “Get out of Dodge“, must be listen to with a grain of salt, and he has made it clear before, and in this episode his feelings on the subject matter, he speaks of. To make a case that a subway patron should be allowed to dictate how one chooses to protect...Read full review »

So many interesting stories that would not have come into my consciousness had it not been for this podcast! Always intriguing to unearth previously unchallenged insights.

It seems the sample episodes - the first 2 seasons - is a bad sample. The show underwent changes for shooting later and the number of gunshots and deaths decreased in later episodes. If you don’t want to be fair, state that you are manipulating politics.

Excellent - a classic Cautionary Tales episode! From a devotee of the series from its outset.

Great podcast with a broad range of stories of how and when things go wrong. As an economist Tim approaches these things from a pragmatic perspective. He has great guests as well.

If I was asked to recommend just one ‘can’t miss’ podcast - this would be it! Each tale is a true story of failure and a moral which we can (& should) all learn from. I love some of the topics Malcolm reports. However now I find myself listening to so so many repeated long commercial ad breaks that it feels like a waste of my time. I appreciate some ads but this just feels like greed and it’s not worth it. Unsubscribing to save my sanity.

Tim Harford looks at the lessons we can learn from failure and foolishness. Always thoughtful, often sympathetic to those who failed, he picks through the reasons behind the failure or why it had the consequences it did. My teenage son and I love the story telling techniques of Tim Hartford. The introduction draws you in and the data inspires deeper thinking into our accepted beliefs.

Really interesting and clever presentation of interesting stories that can teach us a thing or two. Occasionally the background music is too intrusive which isn’t great for accessibility but it’s always worth struggling through because the content is so good
