“My mother loved country music so I grew up listening to and watching all the greats. Thanks to the books and magazines she would buy and I would also read, I felt I knew a lot about country music. even the gossip. But after listening to just the first two episodes of this podcast, it became clear that I was only floating on the surface, that there was so much more to these old songs and legendary performers than I ever realized. Tyler Mahan Coe took what I thought I knew about these stories, songs, and people and he just...
blew. it. up.
Mr. Coe entertains, challenges, and gently urges you to think more broadly and deeply. While he acknowledges the ideas, concepts and stories that we are familiar with, he also draws new parallels or simply reveals information the listener may not have ever known before. The episodes are neatly organized, carefully researched, and the clips are thoughtfully chosen. His delivery is honest and fresh.
Don't let the words "country music" put you off: even if you are not a big fan of the genre or familiar with some of the artists or material, I believe you could still find something interesting in the episodes. For example, the episode on Bobbie Gentry is not just a re-cap of her life or a detailed analysis of her most famous song, but touches on the psychology of fame vs. fortune. I strongly recommend this podcast, with the Louvin Brothers episode, so far, being my favorite. :)”Read full review »

“I believe Cocaine and Rhinestones has the potential to be for Country Music lovers what Dan Carlin’s “Hardcore History” is for World History Buffs. Very insightful and quite entertaining.”

These country heroes are the original gansters of music with stories brought to life in vivid, compelling and heartbreaking detail. A...”Read full review »
