Metcalf is an amateur and not funny either
I just listened to the George Carlin "memorial" on the July 4th 2008 edition. I have never heard a more offensive portrayal of the recently departed than Stephen Metcalf's take on Carlin - "I just don't think he is funny." Then they went on and played very funny Carlin clips. If you are going to cover such a topic, do not dismiss the dead. Just cover something else! I believe Dana Stevens came to Carlin's defense but Metcalf just brushed her aside and closed the program. I like all the Slate gabfests. I look forward to hearing Dana and Julia spar with the dyspeptic Mr. Metcalf. The show reminds me of long-ago dorm and coffee shop conversations with the artsy crowd at college. If your eyes rolled when this crowd referenced Tolstoy or Bergman, look elsewhere.
