Conversational Bricolage
These three are bricoleurs of conversation, picking from the odds and ends of cultural events and trends and cobbling together engaging discussion. The selected topics range from the high- to the poppiest of the pop lowbrow (from an homage to Eric Rohmer to frank dissection of Lady GaGa's current appeal). But really, what's discussed is almost immaterial, because the quality of the discussion is divine. The fairly inimitable Dana Stevens, Stephen Metcalf, Julia Turner, and occasional guest star June Thomas spin talk circles and weave wide figure eights around the average commentary fare. They're eloquent and personable speakers who apply their knowledge of the best that has been thought and said to what's still being produced and processed (or, as Stephen has called them, "synthetic non-events that you can discuss endlessly around a water cooler"). They're curious, discerning, and capable of more than several impromptu extended metaphors per podcast. If I had my own podcast, I would endorse the Culture Gabfest weekly.Read full review »
