“I do listen to this weekly, so someone is doing something right. (Years ago I sometimes watched “PTL Club” for amusement, so someone was doing something right there as well.). Increased editorial/production oversight from Slate would be welcome, as would a different host. I don’t think you could find a more self-focused advice-dispenser than Mallory. *She* wants this and that for listeners, *she* is so sorry (almost every single time) that he letter writer had x, y or z happen to them, etc. Conversations she had and things that crossed her mind before taping are per se fascinating and topical, her friends are per se great co-hosts. Almost at her whim, she’ll take letter writers at their word or supply subtext for reasons often not apparent form the text. She’ll often ghost-write wonderfully self-focused phrases for letter writers to employ. (“Thank you for your input. I’m completely delighted with the decision I made. I wish you well.”)
Lately there is a fixation on “safety”—maybe half of recent responses touch on this. Model answer: If you need to drown someone else’s Doberman puppies to make sure you’re safe, do what you need to do. A newer theme is that letter writers need to blow up their lives, if need be, in the service of certain moral imperatives. Looking forward to where that one takes us in future podcasts.
It’s hard to tell whether the mix of problems/themes is representative of the mix of letters received, or curated. It’s a subset of the world’s problems, to be sure, but not an uninteresting one.”
