Grief and loss play an incredible role in the mental health of us all as we age. We inevitably experience the loss of loved ones, friends, and aspects of our own health and vitality, often not recognizing ourselves from who we used to be. These losses can trigger feelings of profound sadness, loneliness, and even depression. For many of us, grief can become a constant companion, as we grapple with the passing of peers and loved ones. The effect of multiple losses over time takes a toll on our mental well-being, leading to feelings of isolation, purposelessness, and existential angst. It's important for older adults to acknowledge and process their grief in healthy ways, whether through therapy, support groups, or creative outlets. By honoring their losses and finding meaningful ways to remember and cherish those they've lost, we can live through that grief and find comfort and peace as we age.
