Amazing
A wonderful podcast for those of us who want to learn about tragic events WITHOUT the sensationalism and borderline fetishistic approach that most “true crime” creators use. Disaster Area is entertaining while remaining respectful towards the victims, informational but with context so you understand what is being presented, and engaging. Disaster area also focuses in on victims and survivors, telling the human side of the story not just the events themselves. Jennifer’s voice and writing style have a conversational feel, and she doesn’t shy away from referencing pop culture and the historical canon to lend context and comparisons to the more niche disasters that the listener may be unfamiliar with. Many of the episodes tie into a topic that is in the news, so if you want to learn from history’s mistakes to (hopefully) not repeat them, disaster area is wonderful for that. Now that I’m done waxing poetic, I LOVE this podcast, I listen to it at work and it helps me stay focused in on my repetitive tasks while teaching me about history and stories that I may have never heard before (… well I haven’t heard of most of these) seriously I love it so much, I am so happy I found the pod on tumblr.

In early episodes, I think she was just finding her voice, and...Read full review »

Good content. sound research, and interesting topics. Entertaining and informative delivery but the host could do with rehearsing before recording. Too many mid-sentence pauses and irritating speech habits make her sound inarticulate and disorganised in her train of thought. This makes the...Read full review »

The host does an incredibly thorough job of researching each disaster, and each episode either teaches me more than I'd already known about a disaster I'd heard about before or introduces me to a disaster that's entirely new to me. Early episodes of the podcast are a bit shakier, but...Read full review »
