Not about supervision or parole
I have a deep interest and background in criminal justice stories, but this ain't one. There is no depth given AT ALL of the parole system or the real experience of supervision, which is a broken and nearly impossible system to navigate and be successful in completing; in fact, the recidivism rate is ridiculously high at 44% and 62% within 3-4 years of release (Dept of Justice stats). But there is no examination of the system to focus and contextualize the experience of the subject here. In fact, the degree of intimacy and - dare I say - affection this "reporter" demonstrates towards her subject is disturbing. *mild spoilers* The subject viciously beat his wife and her son, a child. He had a long rap sheet of domestic violence and abused alcohol. He also clearly lied to her multiple times. She minimizes the experience of the abused by victim blaming the subject's ex-wife, who displayed classic abused symptoms, and downplays the extensive history of violence the subject has. The end is so disgusting as she tries to imply that the system kills him for untreated or poorly treated medical conditions (which she never verifies, the subject himself provides her with his diagnoses) and she waxes sympathetic for his poor life and choices. A truly shoddy journalistic project that her editors and all the people who signed off on this story should have caught and corrected. While the system does provide little support for parolees and probationers, it does not excuse what this man did and his continued pattern of violence, abuse, and alcoholism. This story did not examine that at all. Shame on you.Read full review »
