“Truth is profoundly simple, yet often difficult to accept. The truth is the tools Dr Burns has developed are real and effective. But the truth is their effectiveness is conditional. Their effectiveness is dependent on one thing: you. You will have to be determined to work hard and you will have to be willing to humble yourself further than you ever thought possible. If the tools aren’t working for you, there is a very good chance your pride is getting in the way.
This podcast is primarily geared towards therapists wanting to learn TEAM-CBT (David Burns’ new standard in psychotherapy), but it can also be very helpful to anyone struggling with depression and anxiety. However, I would say that it takes a little more work for the common person seeking help. Because it stays pretty high-level and often will not (cannot) address your situation specifically, it will require you to do a lot of deep thinking to draw connections from the concepts presented to your specific issue, and in-turn feel better. That said, I know that might sound discouraging to some, but I have to say: it’s worth it. If you’re willing to do the work you will find REAL truth and clarity from implementing these tools. This truth ultimately leads to hope and a positive outlook on life.
My tips for the average person seeking help for depression/anxiety from this podcast:
- Take notes
- Be patient and stick with it
- Be open-minded, willing to accept challenging ideas”
