Shame
First I want to say how moved I was by your book. I’m a trauma/EMDR therapist so I listened to this episode with my professional ear. I want to offer you another frame re: Sam P & “those shows”. At 13 you were an exceptionally talented actress & comedienne. To your audience, your character and those shows are a poignant memory from *their* (sometimes difficult, lonely or traumatic) childhoods. When they call you Sam or shout a joke from the show they are *honoring* you & your talent. They’re saying “you and the work you did so many years ago were and are meaningful to me!” I definitely understand that for you those years were traumatic, but I wonder if your shame has nothing to do with sweet funny Sam, and everything to do with sweet, suffering, abused young Jennette. So heal her, and I hope you can actually get to a place of tenderness & gratitude, not just tolerance, for the funny silly shows you made famous with your talent & the folks who still remember them fondly.

More reviews of Hard Feelings with Jennette McCurdy
Thank you for being vulnerable and deciding to share your thoughts with listeners, So many things you have said have made me reflect back to when I was in my 20’s and early 30’s. From a fellow control freak who felt she had so much to prove, I look forward to more episodes.
