Firefighters are responding to a brush fire in Leeward Oahu Wednesday afternoon. Smoke billowing from the fire could be seen for miles around. Multiple HFD units are on scene along with federal partners as they work to gain the upper hand on the blaze. The fire was listed as being in the area of Kapolei Parkway.

The University of Hawaii’s abrupt decision to fire its athletics director stunned the community, including student-athletes and longtime supporters of the program. Craig Angelos had only been on the job for 18 months before he was notified Tuesday of his dismissal by outgoing UH president David Lassner. His last day is Dec. 1.

West Maui community members gathered Tuesday evening to discuss the future of a school destroyed in last year’s fire. King Kamehameha III Elementary School can’t be rebuilt at its original location on Front Street in Lahaina. The site was ruled out for multiple reasons, including the discovery of iwi kupuna, or ancestral bones which are considered sacred, during debris removal.

Honolulu police are investigating a suspected attempted murder in the University Area last Saturday night, according to Honolulu police officials. According to HPD, a 36-year-old woman allegedly shot at her 40-year-old ex-boyfriend with a handgun and then fled the area late last night.

The Hawaii News Now First Alert Weather team has declared that Thursday and Friday will be First Alert Weather Days. The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the leeward areas of all islands Friday as the combination of dry fuels, low relative humidity, and strong trade winds could lead to critical fire weather conditions during the day. This warning will be in effect from 10 AM to 6 PM.
