This is a story of so many layers. It was so captivating and incredibly real. I loved listening to it. I was transported on a journey of wonder, sadness and disbelief. So well told given the sensitivities involved. Just brilliant!

Fantastic story about a friendship between a human and an animal. Alan Cooper was privileged to experience this amazing bond. The whole show had me gripped and his story has been told so well. Such a shame that this friendship ended as it did

The host is awful and ruined what would have been a fantastic podcast.
MJLJ373 via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 03/08/24
Story was a bit interesting but the producers believe in telling you what happen then letting the participants tell you what happened then they tell you again. The ending was very obvious 1 or 2 episodes would have been fine

What a gorgeous story of dolphins, animal rights, and the best — and worst — of humanity. Freddie was so special. Bravo

I thought there may be one episode that mentioned Dolphin pleasuring but I’m sad to report it’s the whole show and that I had to hear the phrase “Dolphin Penis” 100 times more than one should in life. I laughed out loud thinking about the people producing this podcast. What a waste of time.

Interesting (harrowing) story, but narrated as if this is a children’s tale. Very odd.
fedupofbabylon via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 12/17/23
I learnt a lot about dolphin anatomy! There was entertainment value in the absurdity of it all, but also a genuine interest in the well-being of those affected. Overall I felt the podcast struck the right tone

This is a fascinating story, in equal parts scandalous, tragic and wholesome. It’s a heartwarming reminder of how transformative our relationships with animals can be. I was completely attached to Freddie myself by the end. The sound design is particularly uniquely lovely. Very highly recommend!

I wanted to listen to this podcast but am put off listening, as other reviewers have said we aren’t four year olds.. a different presenter could really ‘sell’ the story.
Kat13girl via Apple Podcasts · Australia · 10/31/23
Intriguing story, well told, you wouldn’t believe it if it wasn’t true. Raises questions about humans’ relationships with animals on all fronts. Narrator comes in for a bit of stick in the reviews but for once I thought the cheeky script actually worked. Leaves room for the viewer to make their...Read full review »

This story could have been told in an hour.
Riva Refuge Inc via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 10/26/23
A very fascinating podcast that was thoroughly and even handedly presented. The narrators style was to tell it almost like a children’s story but given the unusual nature of the events surrounding Freddie it works.

Great story but I don’t need you to tell it like I’m a four year old.

Meh
Unique story but a waste of time. I’m pretty sure we all know what this fella & the dolphin actually were up to in those 300 hours of romantic silence & solitude. Under the gray cloudy skies & dropping temperatures. He could only get so much heat from the dolphin’s body warmth. And...Read full review »

A story well told! Wild and great story!

What a GREAT story. If I had read the story rather than hearing it on a podcast I’m not sure I’d have enjoyed it nearly as much. The voice actors were incredible, the background noises, the narrator - everything made it seem real life.
Nerak1691 via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 10/12/23
The tone was completely off… as if it were for a child. Thin story, dragged over a 6 part series.
gabyown via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/10/23
Why was this podcast narrated by what sounds like a children’s author? Awful! I was interested to listen to the story, but had to stop as the dreadful storytelling, patronising tone and childlike intonation kept throwing me off.

This podcast is brilliant! I was ‘hooked’…

Amble is far from cold, grey and run down. This is actually extremely offensive for anyone who lives or is from this area. I understand the need to sensationalise in order to get listeners, but this goes beyond the line.
ScottishMackem via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/08/23
I started listening because of the wild headline and got completely hooked (excuse the pun) on Alan’s story. It’s clear he suffered dearly because of this bizarre accusation - that was a joke to everyone else - and I hope he has some kind of closure by doing this show!!
mrs_radish via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/07/23
Interesting enough story but too long-drawn-out and the narration is frankly bizarre. Felt like a little kid being told a story. Wildly inappropriate for the subject matter.
RachelMcCo via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/06/23
Seen plenty as a dolphin watch guide for 22 years, have seen the “members” of male pods and it doesn’t surprise me that they also use them to “hook” things - they do it with dorsal fins also. What an awful accusation, inclined to believe in Alan's innocent friendship.Read full review »

Amble is far from cold and run down and the locals weren’t agape in wonder at Freddie like it was the Loch Ness monster. Don’t waste your time

Really enjoying this podcast. A brilliant take on true crime. Told with intrigue and constant twists and turns. I’m hooked!
EdIslaBella via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/05/23
The narrator has this very serious tone as if she’s talking about a heinous crime. But then - gasp- it’s about a man accused of having sex with a dolphin. (Huh?) This sounds like an SNL skit making fun of podcasts. However the production value is great, sound effects and music. It’s just kind of...Read full review »

A weird and wonderful tale. On the surface it sounds like a bit of a laugh, something kind of silly. But it gives something much deeper and more human. Amazing story delivered brilliantly by the host. Lovely music and the sounds of swimming with Freddie the dolphin.

Really engaging writing and presenting. Episodes come out a few days early for Wondery members, but they all become free to listen to. Great show.
lettucerejoice via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/04/23
This Podcast, about a man accused of ‘w*nking-off a dolphin’ is narrated as though it’s aimed at children… it’s so tonally out of place that it seems indecent.
Nihlisimo via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 10/03/23
Excellent narrator & interesting story. Really don’t understand why reviews have been given based on waiting for episode & not being subscribed to Wondery . That’s an option, not a necessity. Not sure if people realise you can still access this as a free podcast, except you get the...Read full review »

This is an extraordinary story and gripping from the start. It’s brilliantly put together by the narrator Becky Milligan. She has a great warmth and humour, as well as empathy for this bizarre tale, allowing it to unfold and giving voice to all the people involved, including Freddie himself. The...Read full review »

This story is odd, unfair and funny. But it also had my eyes welling up. It’s almost like the vindictiveness of humans is pitted against the free, friendliness of animals. And a stark reminder of the hate and horrid nature of the British press that is still ruining lives 30 years later....Read full review »

Very strange description of Amble, already a tourist destination since the 1960’s and popular as ever right through the 1980’s. Plus Freddie wasn’t regarded as some magical beast from a far off land, here to save the town from destitution, it was just a bit of a novelty. Typical southern view of...Read full review »

I had vaguely heard the rumours of this story over the years. Was very interesting and entertaining to hear this story. Absolutely bonkers what happened!

Now I question why BRITs are so stuck up. How many stupid people are there? What was the man’s proof? Was he in the water with him? Throwing antibiotics and herbs into a big river? Too Stupid.

A crazy tale with Becky’s tongue in cheek style offering the perfect narration. Highly recommended.

I would have subscribed to Wondery, a prime opportunity to convert a lead and make it revenue generating. Why would you put a paywall in right at the end of the series they’ve been watching, BEFORE you’ve got the customer converted. This is specifically with reference to Hooked on Freddie. It’s...Read full review »
