I love your content. I really do. I can learn about people I didn’t even think to learn about. But you need a professional voice or performance coach. Your affections. Your needless change in pitch. The way you draw out a single syllable twice as long as it needs to be. It doesn’t make the...Read full review »

I just found this gem of a history podcast! I’m listening to pod recording from 2017 to current! Learning a lot. So much more fun to learn for fun as a grown up!

Was all I could stand of the narration. Up and down the scale he goes, self conscious pauses sprinkled liberally. You’d think he was talking to 5 year olds. Narrators - you do not need to ‘act’. Just read the text authentically.

I love the way Devon developed his everyday stories in such amazing and entertaining way
oscrodmed via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 03/25/23
Devon’s voice is in my view a lot less boring than many podcasters ( try the history of crusades lady ) so I like it. The ads are awful if I could get hold of Flo advertising a product you can’t even by in 194 countries which is on a constant loop ..... well it wouldn’t end well. The content...Read full review »

History persists in being of interest. I just haven’t heard some of these sources and the readings are both excellent and understandable.

Devon weaves the world of the characters whose story he tells vividly and with craft. Richly researched, deftly narrated, I find this podcast a fantastic escape from the cares of the world. Yes, his narrative cadence is unusual, but give it a moment. Let it lull you into the pace of history,...Read full review »

Interesting subject matter with very poor delivery.

Love the little side notes the medieval travelers make on new cultures. Like the quotes the narrator uses as well.

A great podcast that sheds light on the little covered bits on medieval history.

These are human stories told with style and poetic grace. Many of the tales told here are from the hidden and forgotten places in history. From a priest travelling to meet the Great Khan, to a letter from Prestor John, their stories and humanity are brought back in a poetic style by a modern...Read full review »

Pretty sure they need fo have so many ads because the listener count is so low. I’m willing to bet most of the positive reviews come from people who think the host has a verbal disability and they are “trying to be nice”. It’s unlistenable. And I love the content.

I found this while searching for an engaging history podcast that doesn’t tell me the same stories I’ve heard a thousand times before. I love this especially since it’s based on real letters and books from the period. which gives you the perspective of the humans who lived in this time, what...Read full review »

Learn something very different from your typical podcast. The more episodes I listen to the more I get into this show. There’s a lot of detail so I often listen to sections 3 or 4 times to follow the complete story.

I’m admittedly a history nerd. I find this podcast to be thoughtful and well researched. It covers a subject and time frame that is rarely presented in western history. The narration is soft spoken and easy to listen to. I often use it to lull me to sleep, and I mean this in a good way.
matan0 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 04/28/21
The information presented is outstanding...but the presenter was a weird sing song way of speaking that follows the same pattern regardless of what he’s actually saying. It ends of with weird juxtapositions between the content and how he’s sort of singing it. It’s a real missed opportunity.

This was the first podcast I ever really got into awesome it’s very interesting

Respectfully to the host. The sing song delivery is not the right approach. Now, certainly, I don’t have the data that you have on your show’s episode to episode performance. But, I will tell you this: narrate more “normally” and you’ll find a 10-20x improvement in your metrics. A show like...Read full review »

I love the idea for this shooooow. But the hoooost has a strange haaabit of elongating syllables. I hate to criticize the waaaay people speak, but thiiiiiis is really distrangiiiiiing.

What a great idea to tell history from the point of view of a traveller. This offbeat idea translates into a series of engrossing episodes. This is a fantastic history podcast. Wonderful work, easy to listen to and fun! Keep it up! I’ve listened to the entire catalogue and will do so again. In league with hardcore history!

I really wish I could listen to this well-researched, well-written podcast, but the narrator’s affected, sing-songy declamation is like nails on a chalkboard. It’s as if he reads in time to a metronome.
Therm E. Dore via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 08/30/20
But the podcaster’s speech affectation/song-song makes it impossible to listen to. I wish he would deliver the same material in normal speech. It’s a great concept for a podcast, though.

Honestly I really like the content. It’s well put together and interesting. Our host narrates the journeys of a lifetime & medieval Florence (or wherever) comes pungently, spectacularly alive. This is a jewel & our host is not just the setting of this jewel, his passion for his tale & iridescent flamboyance are beguiling & pure pleasure to share.

I was excited to hear it after reviwing the content. I was disappointed by the way the information was presented. The podcaster's sing song delivery was odd and rendered the podcast useless. Whoever was responsible for this should go back and re-record the content...Read full review »

If you’ve ever wished your history was served up by a Canadian hipster sporting a slightly effeminate vocal fry, well wait no longer! According to the (presumably hand-picked) reviews on his site, at least one listener adores his voice. I am not among that crowd. But such things are personal...Read full review »

Great content, well researched, and engaging narration. Too bad the ads are significantly louder than the rest of the podcast. I’m ok with ads to support the podcast, but this is ridiculous.

I love history and the medieval time period is harder to research due to the lack of accountable documentation. So excited to find this but it is so boring! the subject matter is so great, but the narrator just drones on and on and I can't even. If they punctuated this with pertinant music or varied the tone and narration it would be a lot better. Good luck!Read full review »

Great voice and subject matter. Give it a try! I wish I liked it more but I no longer listen as it has the feeling of a novel. It’s well written but I personally enjoy the one way conversation style of Hardcore History, History on Fire and Martyr Made.

I wouldn’t mind the ads so much if the entire podcast was at that volume. After the second time I had to yank my earbuds out painfully because of the sudden yelling advertisement, I decided this podcast wasn’t worth wrecking my nerves for. This is a great narrative podcast which takes a look at some familiar time periods and cultures in an unexpected way. See medieval cultures through the eyes of visitors and it shows the world has been connected even in the “dark ages”
