Great podcast so far. I had no idea the TikTok tics phenomenon started way earlier back in 2011! Sadly mental illness and psychogenic illnesses are still not something anyone wants to accept as real illnesses. Our own stigmas and biases kept these girls from getting help and the parents are to blame. People would rather believe in conspiracy theories than accept the obvious facts in front of their eyes.

Susan Dominus wrote extensively about this in the New York Times Magazine when it happened, and then Megan Abbott wrote a novel about it. The show is fine, but this story has been covered a lot.

Whilst this is a fascinating story, to hear that ‘Conversion Disorder’ and ‘Hysteria’ are still being used by the podcast host to describe what is a complex and highly debilitating illness now recognised as Functional Neurological Disorder is very disappointing.
