Listenability varies wildly.
Some historians are not meant to be public speakers. So many “ums”. Very interesting subjects are rendered painful to listen to. I turned off the Eunuchs episode as the accent of the first historian and her tendency to pronounce “r’s” with a “w” sound makes the presentation distracting. Also, the host is an obnoxious old man with bad manners and no concept of how to treat his guests. I recommend the History of England Podcast if you are into a few of these subjects, especially the Tudor court.

The topics are very interesting and the guests pick very interesting intricacies. The host often pushes them to talk about the topic the way he wants (being particularly bad with female guests) and if he wants topics spoken about in a certain way then the format is wrong.

I would have given 5 stars but often struggle to understand what Melvyn Bragg is saying because he mumbles. Please speak more clearly Melvyn.

apart from the odd, unnecessary and unpleasant sexist remark from the host, as if a female with a high level of education doesn’t understand a topic she is extremely informed about, its great !
