Yes it’s got a huge range of discussions about many topics I’ve never heard of. And many that I am very interested to hear about. However Bragg’s constant interruptions when a guest is talking is really irritating. He’s SO rude. His interruptions are usually spot on but I wish he would be a...Read full review »

The only thing that I find disappointing is the host. I find that he mutters and is incoherent. Very difficult to listen to. His guests are excellent, articulate and measured in heir speech.

This podcast is excellent, an example of the quality the BBC can produce. Sometimes I’ve never heard of the subjects or it’s something I wouldn’t be interested in, but it always entertains me and interests me. Great stuff.

I have recommended this amazing resource to numerous colleagues and family members - there is nothing else like it and I hope the BBC continues to broadcast this very valuable programme for many years to come.

The guests and topics are wonderful. Excellent analysis and commentary, but I really struggle with the host. He’s so condescending, rude and patronising to EXPERTS. He’s even like that during the extra bits. I appreciate his input into getting this show made, but he’s doing it a disservice by...Read full review »

I first came across Melvyn Bragg when I moved to the UK in 2010. This show goes in depth on a range of subjects, and I’ve learnt a lot. Intelligent conversation with knowledgeable guests. Sir Melvyn seems prepared with poignant questions as well. Highly recommended!

The episode about the spanish civil war was very bad. No mention of the slaughter of priests, monks and nuns. The desecration/demolition of churches. No mention of the thousands of french and russians fighting for the red side. This was the british/leftist version of history...

Funny - I don’t find Bragg at all patronising - for me, he conducts well, apologises when he interrupts and constantly gives his guests the opportunities to share their insights.

A roundtable discussion with some of those respected scholars in a field of historical study, expertly moderated by one of the classiest and most well spoken British radio hosts in the business. ... but I find the host’s interruptions irritating and rude. He often disrupts the narrative with random questions. However, the guests are exceptional and the topics discussed are enticing so I congratulate him on this front. I just wish Melvyn would be a little bit friendlier.

As the programme was conceived and developed by Melvyn Bragg I think it would be churlish to oust him. I find him an excellent host. He is well prepared by his researchers and invites on genuine academics (not media stars) who know what they’re talking about. He manages the discussions well....Read full review »

Alas, most subjects are way too large for a 50-minute discussion. Sometimes a subject must be treated so generally that we’re left with no more than a Britannica entry. Sometimes I fancy Melvyn Bragg’s impatience aimed not at a scholar trying to elucidate a complex point but at the clock, which...Read full review »

Excellent programme and range of topics. Melvyn brilliant at moving things along. I don’t agree at all about the female guests - please remember the BBC has 50% quotas so they have to have females even where they are thin on the ground in a given area.

Ask yourself, how can a weekly erudite broadcast on an incredibly broad range of topics and a different group of academics each week have a successful 21(+?) year run? On the face of it, it would be impossible. Professors, in particular in the humanities, would either just drone on about their...Read full review »

I love this podcast because it’s not just one person blathering on for two hours. I enjoy the range of topics and guests. As an American, I especially love the British viewpoints on American history. Melvyn can be a bit abrupt and harsh on his guests. Some historians are not meant to be public speakers. So many “ums”. Very interesting subjects are rendered painful to listen to.
