MB moves his impossibly erudite guests through the discussion at a wonderfully brisk pace. Zero fat, a wealth of substance. A podcast for the impatient and intellectually curious.

I can't write enough about the beauty of this podcast concerning the allergic and brilliant Heinsberg. However, the commercials that interrupted the narrative were so sudden--abrupt, and audibly irritating, that it woke me up. They were like nails on a blackboard. I can't afford to pay...Read full review »

Painfully boring discussion punctuated by an unprofessional coughing host too dim to use a mute switch that would spare listeners from hearing his annoyingly gross smokers cough.

Excellent show. Cannot believe another reviewer has given a one-star review just because presenter Melvyn Bragg is a member of the Garrick Club. Utterly insane!

Melvyn, Simon, and Virginia have crafted the greatest educational podcast for adults that exists. Experts explain and then discuss an enormous range of topics for 40ish minutes. Melvyn is the greatest presenter (ever, of all time) a treasure for all the world to share. The best bits are when the...Read full review »

The host is rude, unprofessional, patronising and arrogant. He constantly interrupts his guests and talks over them. He mumbles, speaks too fast, swallows half of his words. Honestly, how did this person get the job?

Can’t fault this show for lack of ambition, words or enthusiasm. The conversational, meeting of the minds dimension of it is truly unique. But sometimes you wish you could pick and choose one theme and disregard just about all the rest. At those times (and they are not infrequent) you might as...Read full review »

I love In Our Time and its wide ranging areas of interest. I appreciate thoughtful commentary on topics across many disciplines - the arts, sciences, contemporary existence, ancient life. But I am profoundly disappointed to have learned that Melvin Bragg is a member of the women-excluding...Read full review »

I’ve stopped listening since this early access charge was put in place. I wonder if that’s a common theme. It’s too bad as it was my favorite program.

I enjoy the programs, but the Twelfth Night discussion was lacking. Gender and class were at the fore, but the great language of the play was hardly touched on.

It’s wonderful that we get to listen such an array of academics exploring different topics! Plus coffee or tea part at the end always makes me smile -very relatable ☺️

Excellent content but a disgrace EU citizens ( or anyone willing to educate themselves) would have to pay. How cheap and short-sighted can authorities be!

This is a general comment. Melvyn Bragg is by far the best host of any Podcast series. The topics are incredible and he is essential in keeping the experts on track. Experts are so immersed in their expertise that they easily wonder off at a tangent. Keep it up

Honestly I don’t see why this is necessary. Always enjoyed the program and saw it as one of the most enjoyable of the bbc . It cheapens the concept now. Im really disappointed.

I really enjoy the deep intellectual conversations on a variety of topics. I would like less interruptions from Melvin Bragg, as he’s not the expert to any of these topics and we’re here to listen to the guests. Asking guests to summarize a complex topic in one minute is unnecessary. When Melvin...Read full review »

Breggs is condescending and constantly interrupts particularly female guests. I listen because the guests are intelligent and interesting but god Breggs makes it difficult.

Appearing on this show is basically reaching the top of UK society. There is nowhere else to go. You’ve basically concluded life after appearing on this show. Better than years in university. Better than school. Given me more than I could ever type out here. Grounded, not shy of detail, humane,...Read full review »

At times it’s an academic hubbub, a dirge of dons finagling some subtle theological sleight-of-hand, at others its a lively debate on pop culture, a Greek tragedy or a literal exploration of stars. Irrespective, the topics are remarkably diverse and usually entertaining. Melvyn’s guidance is...Read full review »

Great history panel show but the host is annoying, can’t his researcher give him a better cheat sheet? Some episodes have uneven sound quality where the third guest is sitting too far from the mic.

My favorite type of podcast is one from which I can learn. So many of these episodes sound incredibly compelling and they are subjects I’m deeply interested in. I’m amazed and embarrassed to realise that I haven’t left a review of this show before, since I’ve been listening to it for years. Mr Bragg’s pertinent questions flow quickly from an undoubtably intelligent mind but his diction is poor. He frequently drifts into a mumble, which as a Canadian listener, I miss key portions of phrases despite my being thoroughly familiar with British speech. A pity. Please get the host to stop interrupting guests constantly, it comes across as rude and is incredibly frustrating to listen to. I had to give up.

Of the latest five “available” episodes, only one is available to non paying subscribers. I’m inclined to unfollow and save myself the frustration. I only listen to aid in falling to sleep. There are better alternatives.

As a podcaster, in the early days (2010+) I used to resent the BBC a bit - all those resources! While I laboured from my shed in the small hours. Now in the new world with history of all sorts, suppprted by corporates, networks, a vast number of podcasts some rigorous, some hideously partisan,...Read full review »

I, like many other posters, find this programme to be superb. The range of topics is utterly amazing. This is why the BBC is cherished in the U.K and perhaps globally. Three eminent specialists in the title subject matter with a consummate professional at the helm. Beats any podcast from advertising funded or overly woke producers. Fantastic. Makes me proud to be be English.

This a tremendous show, covering so many different topics. However, Melvyn’s patience seems to wear out and becomes impatient. I’ve been listening to this podcast on & off for years. The content is usually very strong, but they’ve started putting in ads in the middle, which totally breaks up the flow of the conversation. Stick to the older episodes to avoid the ads.
