If you want to learn something, about something, this is the only place to go. Simply outstanding

This would be so much better if the host didn’t constantly interrupt his guests, especially the women - they can barely get a word in despite being there to share their expertise! I listen for the content but the patronising interruptions make it a very difficult and infuriating listen.

Potentially very interesting podcast, but host is slurring his words and too hard to understand for me.

I actually can’t remember how I came across it, but it was a blessed moment . This series is deep and thought provoking, making it a must for anyone who wants to know more about themselves and the world around them. Oh, and it’s highly entertaining too ;)

Maybe time to get a host who has the ability to enunciate? Do like Melvers but, well, bless.

Nothing exceptional, but there’s usually information here worth learning.

I’ve been listening to this for years and love it, especially the science strand which has strongly moved my dial back to the very very small (the proton) and forward to the very very large (the Universe’s shape). Melvyn Bragg’s inquisitive mind is what brings these stories alive for the...Read full review »

Best guests & host— even if I’m not initially interested in the topic, they get me interested with just their conversation. I always learn some “nuggets”— even about topics that I know well. IF something wasn’t covered, listen to the “bonus time” afterwards & it’ll be. Great adult bedtime...Read full review »

Found it years ago and been listening ever since. Not every topic is in my wheelhouse but most are and I think most inquisitive folks would agree with that. If you are a first timer go back and enjoy the extensive catalog.

Such a rare and consistently enjoyable podcast. Not only are expert guests knowledgeable enough to know they they know everything, they all have pleasant voices. What’s more, they interact respectfully and share the space. The subject mater is varied and interesting. Regardless of what it’s...Read full review »

Host is rude. Not nice to listen to when he’s speaking over the guests and telling them to hurry up.

It is so distracting when half your English guests are hissing uncontrollably. Like nails on a chalkboard.
hollywoodbabylon6 via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 08/16/24
I enjoy the panelists and topics in this show but Melvin is frequently a misogynist bully to women in this show. Most obviously he was revolting in his treatment of Helen Foxhall Forbes, from what I recall. He should be ashamed of himself and his producers or someone should educate him on how to...Read full review »

Distracting background sounds of papers and people shuffling as well as overly sensitive microphones that pick up every piece of saliva and mucus…good information but so hard to listen too. Also host has that horrible upper class British habit of drowning the last part of a sentence and mumbling...Read full review »

In your notes, you show Michelangelo’s birth in 1477. His dates are 1475-1564. And yes, it matters.

This show is a national treasure, always smart, surprisingly so, a beacon for what media can be.

Yes, Bragg can be grouchy and imperious at times and I wish the topics weren’t so Eurocentric but that doesn’t keep me from listening to this completely absorbing podcast. I learn at least one thing every episode that is so fascinating I have to share it with my (very patient) husband and friends...Read full review »

This is the most accessible and intellectual podcast I have heard. I love the host and the guests and the topics. Even when I know nothing about a topic when I start to listen, I feel so engaged and instructed by the end of the episode.

Definitely the greatest programme and podcast of all. In Our Time is in our time the best thing of all.

I gave up on this podcast after a few episodes. The best interviewers let smart people talk, and Melvyn Bragg constantly interrupts his guests, controlling things to annoying degree. As a result everything feels rushed and I can’t absorb what the guests are sharing. It’s like he’s trying to cram...Read full review »

MB moves his impossibly erudite guests through the discussion at a wonderfully brisk pace. Zero fat, a wealth of substance. A podcast for the impatient and intellectually curious.

I can't write enough about the beauty of this podcast concerning the allergic and brilliant Heinsberg. However, the commercials that interrupted the narrative were so sudden--abrupt, and audibly irritating, that it woke me up. They were like nails on a blackboard. I can't afford to pay...Read full review »

Painfully boring discussion punctuated by an unprofessional coughing host too dim to use a mute switch that would spare listeners from hearing his annoyingly gross smokers cough.

Excellent show. Cannot believe another reviewer has given a one-star review just because presenter Melvyn Bragg is a member of the Garrick Club. Utterly insane!

Melvyn, Simon, and Virginia have crafted the greatest educational podcast for adults that exists. Experts explain and then discuss an enormous range of topics for 40ish minutes. The host is rude, unprofessional, patronising and arrogant. He constantly interrupts his guests and talks over them. He mumbles, speaks too fast, swallows half of his words. Honestly, how did this person get the job?

Can’t fault this show for lack of ambition, words or enthusiasm. The conversational, meeting of the minds dimension of it is truly unique. But sometimes you wish you could pick and choose one theme and disregard just about all the rest. At those times (and they are not infrequent) you might as...Read full review »

I’ve stopped listening since this early access charge was put in place. I wonder if that’s a common theme. It’s too bad as it was my favorite program.

I enjoy the programs, but the Twelfth Night discussion was lacking. Gender and class were at the fore, but the great language of the play was hardly touched on.

Excellent content but a disgrace EU citizens ( or anyone willing to educate themselves) would have to pay. How cheap and short-sighted can authorities be!

This is a general comment. Melvyn Bragg is by far the best host of any Podcast series. The topics are incredible and he is essential in keeping the experts on track. Experts are so immersed in their expertise that they easily wonder off at a tangent. Keep it up

Honestly I don’t see why this is necessary. Always enjoyed the program and saw it as one of the most enjoyable of the bbc . It cheapens the concept now. Im really disappointed.

Appearing on this show is basically reaching the top of UK society. There is nowhere else to go. You’ve basically concluded life after appearing on this show. Better than years in university. At times it’s an academic hubbub, a dirge of dons finagling some subtle theological sleight-of-hand, at others its a lively debate on pop culture, a Greek tragedy or a literal exploration of stars. Great history panel show but the host is annoying, can’t his researcher give him a better cheat sheet? Some episodes have uneven sound quality where the third guest is sitting too far from the mic.
