Managed decline
Listened to the first part of your podcast on the Liverpool v Arsenal title decider from 1989. It was compelling and I look forward to part 2, despite being a Liverpool fan! However, I have to take issue with one moment in the show when I heard an oft-repeated myth trotted out. I’ve been a journalist in Liverpool for more than 30 years and I always find its repeat fairly irritating… The whole ‘managed decline’ narrative is distorted here. It wasn’t Norman Tebbit who put forward the idea in relation to Liverpool - in fact it was the first time I’ve ever heard a version with his name mentioned. It was actually Geoffrey Howe who suggested, in a memo to Margaret Thatcher, the managed decline policy. I was certainly no fan of Thatcher but she rejected the idea immediately and instead went with Michael Heseltine’s suggestion of an aggressive intervention. And so began Hezza’s long association with Liverpool. Tony McDonough

At last there’s a podcast about football that isn’t the usual banter about what is happening in the Premier League. Linking football history to today’s game is innovative and will interest both casual and die hard fans alike. Rob Draper in particular is excellent and I hope he continues to drop...Read full review »
