“The first episode of "Mabel" is told entirely as a series of voicemails left by an increasingly distressed hospice worker attempting to get in touch with a patient's daughter. Something is wrong with the patient and the house she lives in. While the nature of the problem is unclear from this first episode, it has the feel of a classic haunted house narrative like "Turn of the Screw". "Mabel" manages to get a truly remarkable amount of tension out of a series of voicemails, which most would not think of as such a scary medium. Here, though, it works beautifully.
