“A box of letters; a long series of voicemails to an old woman's absent granddaughter; a strange sign where it should not be; walls that live. This is merely the beginning.
We have forgotten the old ways. We have forgotten the significance and power of names. We have forgotten that true fairytales are not kind, and may not have a happy ending.
"Mabel", by Becca De La Rosa and her anonymous coauthor and narrator, tells a very different kind of creepy story. What haunts the house is not a ghost, and what goes bump in the night holds just as much power in the day. Told in a phone tag series of voicemails, this story draws not from the common elements used in spooky stories of the current era but draws from the old Irish and Scottish mythologies of the Sidhe. Make no mistake: these may be faerie folk, but there is nothing innocent or harmless about them.
The story purposely jolts you around a bit with fractured messages, but it communicates so much more and feels so much more real with that technique. Overall, it flows so smoothly and I never felt like something was missing or left out. If we are not understanding something, the protagonist Anna is even more lost. Dialogue flows normally with conversational tone and seamlessly slides into beautiful prose poems that illustrate a fantastic image of the pain of separated lovers, everyday life, and a dark, fantastical world. I definitely recommend listening to this one.”Read full review »

“I was in love in the first minute of the first episode. The mystery, the eeriness, the tragic subtext and the inevitability of death in every syllable makes this podcast an absolute delight to anyone who's a fan of mystery/horror stories!”Read full review »

“The story is ok but it ambles along at such a slow and disjointed pace that it's lacking. The screaming and screaming fits the narrator and main/only character does in nearly every episode lately is a poor/ cheap way to express her frustration and it's very annoying considering that you...”Read full review »
