Erwin speaks about a central tenet of Judaism being that God has given us free will. This is also a central tenet of Islam as well. God knows what will happen in the future because God is a timeless being. One can think of God as having created time when He created the universe: the day and the night in Genesis. This does not mean that our lives are predetermined in Islam as in the 'Calvinistic' view Erwin mentioned in his Islam podcast Muslims believe God gave us free will since this is clearly stated in the Quran. Muslims can be mistaken about this as can Christians because it is a difficult concept. Just because God knows the outcome does not mean that he makes us do good or evil, it is our free will that determines our choices including asking for His help.
In addition, as Muslims our acts on Earth are not what determines whether we go to heaven. We go to heaven by the grace of God. There is an interesting story told by Prophet Mohamed regarding a very pious man who prayed, gave to charity, went on Hajj and did all manner of good in his life. If people saw this man they would say that surely if anyone was going to heaven then it would be this righteous man. However, on Judgment Day this man could be given the choice to have his good deeds weighed in the balance of his bad deeds to determine whether or not he would go to heaven, but the wise choice according to Prophet Mohamed would be for him to ask for God's mercy and ask for His grace because not one of us goes to heaven on his or her own merits but by the grace of God. So when a Muslim does good works in His or her life they do it out of love and devotion to God and also to be worthy of God's grace. Not every Muslim understands this, but it is written in the Quran. Take a look at what James the brother of Jesus said in James 2:14-17:
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
Who would know Jesus better than his little brother?
Anyway, Islam can be thought of as a return to the original faith of Abraham through the new revelations of Mohamed. Where Moses is a revered prophet, but the meticulous rules of Leviticus don't apply. Where some corrections have been provided such as the sin in the garden of Eden was Adam and Eve's together rather than with Eve as the instigator.
