Much Improved
New-- 4 stars The newer episodes are much better than the old ones, especially the Midterm and Speaker of the House podcasts. The tie-in to today's politics is much better for both. The editing and audio quality are still a little sloppy though. Old-- 3 stars My History Can Beat Up Your Politics examines current political questions and answers by reciting historical examples. Carlson does a good job bringing up important historical events, but his programs lack a strong central focus. Listeners often find themselves wondering, "Why did he bring this up?" We don't know. Carlson poses a question and provides relevant evidence, but he doesn't analyze his evidence enough, and when he does, he doesn't tie it in to the question he poses earlier in the program. There is no central theme within each program. Also, he never connects his knowledge of history to politics. His historical expertise never gives the clarity on current politics that it should. For example, in the "How to End a War" podcast, he tells us how Vietnam ended. Well and good, but he never ties it into how we should end Iraq, the political event that prompted this cast. If he could just give better conclusions that he ties to modern politics, it would be an excellent show.Read full review »

Carlson does a great job of taking a topic or current event and analyzing it simply through presenting historical correlatives. Fascinating, informative, and well presented.

This podcast is always interesting. Bruce Carlson helps us relate current events to historical events, and see why the current situation is similar, or in some cases, very different, than historical events. Always fascinating.
