will the real slate gabfest please stand up
Let it be noted that tSPG was the first to coin the term 'gabfest' for a Slate podcast, and that this hoary institution got us through the (at points) dread campaign /years of our lives/ that were the 2008 election; for this alone these intrepid souls merit our undying respect. True, the frequent inter-party snipes among our endearing panellists tend to strike one sometimes as gratuitous, and true, David Plotz can strike you as a bit whiny and inconsistent, and as one granted too much deference (the careful listener will realise why - he's something like top or second-to-top Slate editor, and thus boss of our favourite hosts Emily (Bazelon) and John(Dickerson)). But even Plotz is endearing once you get to know him, and the half-meant snipes for whatever their other (de)merits do help to prevent the crew from taking themselves too seriously. If I could have one thing different about the show, it would be more time more often for Emily's brilliant legal catch-us-ups, which are fascinating, and in which she truly shines. Or perhaps she should develop her own, additional podcast dedicated to modern law? I would be her greatest fan.Read full review »

If you are interested in the current presidential race I highly recommend this weekly dose of...Read full review »

The negative reviews are bewildering - especially the ones that complain about the format sounding like neighbors just chatting. Who are your neighbors? Mine are ridiculous. In any case, it's called a "gabfest" for a reason. Other reviewers seem to be confusing this podcast with...Read full review »
