The simplicity with which we initiate vocal sound in conversation can inform the way we initiate each phrase we sing. Sung onsets require somewhat more complex coordination than spoken onsets, but the structure that singing provides can actually make sung onsets simpler than spoken ones. The practice of singing is an open-ended endeavor—the more you learn and the greater your skill, the more you are able to see the unlimited possibilities of what your voice can do. Paradoxically, the sooner you embrace the reality of this, the swifter and more enjoyable your progress will be. The practice of singing enables us to embody and give voice to characters who are living the way we would like to live, and experience the kinds of things we would like to experience. These characters also invite us to express powerful emotions and opinions, in ways that can empower us to communicate more passionately and effectively in real life. A posture of waiting is inherently antithetical to the experience of continually living in the present. Be your own Bodhisattva, rather than waiting for an exalted teacher to arrive. When our voices and our lives flow in balance, there is no felt sense of pressure, internal or external, and we feel supported. When there is an uncomfortable sense of pressure, in both our voices and our lives, it means that we are pushing against internal resistance, and it feels like the pushing *is* the singing, or the living. It is not. Join me on my YouTube channel on Monday, November 20 at 10:00am ET for a guided practice session focusing on the relationship between the breath and the...

Dissatisfaction is just an inherent component of our life experiences. Our ability to feel and work with the emotions that arise for us when we experience dissatisfaction, will determine the degree of agency we feel in responding to it. The dichotomy of the carrot and the stick makes for a poor pedagogy, because when you're always reaching for the carrot and avoiding the stick, there is little awareness or energy left for pursing a skill as an end in itself, and enjoying the journey. Anything that unfolds in real time can serve as an effective object of meditation. Traditional objects of meditation include the breathing process and the silent or audible repetition of mantras. Singing is practice that incorporates elements of both. Desire and attachment are not the same thing. Desire is simply the healthy urge to move toward the things we prefer, and the urge to move away from the things we dislike. It is attachment that causes suffering, because we make our happiness and satisfaction contingent upon things that we cannot possibly control. Welcome to the “Practice With Me” podcast. The practice of singing can serve beautifully as an object of meditation.Music unfolds in real time and can center us in the present moment. Earlier in my career, I used mindfulness techniques to teach singing. Now I think of singing as an effective, enjoyable way to teach...
