“This is a review of the series up until Captain's Share. Thus giving you a better idea on why you should perhaps invest your time in it. As opposed to just giving you impressions on the first:
This is a story about NOT Captain Kirk, or Picard, or Sisco, or Archer, or...Instead, continuing the Star Trek example (although this story is in no way set in the Star Trek universe), this is a story about some random person who's parents unexpectedly died, was kicked off-planet, had to learn how to fend for himself, joined the first starship that came along, and started by working in the kitchen.
This, too me, is the thing to know before going into this wonderful series. How, to a large extent, wonderfully mundaine, normal, average it is. Even later on in the series when, for example, you might think he is going to turn into a ship captain the likes of which this galaxy has not yet seen...or perhaps become the biggest business tycoon this galaxy has ever seen...no...you need to remember that he is just a guy who's parents unexpectedly died, was kicked off-planet, had to learn how to fend for himself, joined the first starship that came along, and started by working in the kitchen.
This does not mean he works in the kitchen for 6 books long. The titles alone give this away. Simply do not expect...the story of how he stopped an alien invasion on a galactic scale. There are no aliens here. If you are looking for a character driven story, lovable characters, that is set in the future and somehow still relates to most of our average, every-day lives now...you might find that here. If you can take note of this going in you will be much better for it.
It is hard for me to say something bad about this series...However, the second book you have to get through. Please do not let it put you off. It is, for me, the weakest and in its entirety feels monotonously like it just deals with only one thing. The series however opens up fantastically after that and makes it well worth it.”Read full review »
