I lost sleep over this series
I had to hear one more episode, and then one more. I started listening to these less than a week ago. I expected that 5 books would last 5 – 10 weeks. I've been listening to several podcasts with full background music and sound effects. I am in awe of the way the narrator uses simply his voice to draw the listener so deeply into the story that the sound effects are not missed at all. I've listened to the 5 "Share" books, Quarter, Half, Full, Double, and Captain. They are each, and collectively, absolutely amazing. There were a very few number of times where the intonation change in the recording, usually at the start of a new chapter, was discordant enough that it was obvious that they had been recorded in different sessions, but those instances stand out by their relative rarity. If I were to look hard for reasons to complain, I can only find one. A couple of the chapters in the Half and Full share novels had a bit more detail on romantic interludes than I believe appropriate for my 11 year old. He loved Quarter Share, which we listened to while on a trip. He wants to listen to the rest of the series, but I'm putting 4 or 5 chapters in the Embargo Locker. As others have said, this is an amazing story, set in a fairly consistent science-fiction world. The combination of sailing ships with their attendant cultural/political structure set in a future space-travel science fiction world makes this an amazing vehicle for social commentary, which is what the best science fiction always has been. In many ways, it brings to mind the best aspects of the tv series Firefly, with a bit of Moby Dick and Mutiny on the Bounty. I think Ishmael Wang and Captain Malcolm Reynolds would get along rather well. I can't recommend this series highly enough.Read full review »

Quarter share is an engaging story in and of itself, but also marks the beginning of Nathan Lowell's Trader Tales. Ishmael Wang has been tragically orphaned and is left with no prospects, no job, and a rapidly dwindling inheritance as the company who owns the planet Neris is nickel and...Read full review »
