It’s MARVEL MONTH at Reviews in Twos! This month we’re reviewing “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” first released in 2014. In this first episode, we talk about being in the Marvel fandom, the events of “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011), and mainly discuss the plot of the movie.

- Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): began with the movie “Iron Man” starring Robert Downey Jr. in 2008, movies and series are based on the Marvel Comics.
- Steve Rogers / Captain America / “Cap” / “The First Avenger”: selected to become a Super Soldier during World War Two, was frozen for around 80 years after saving several cities from being bombed, joins The Avengers in the 21st century (once he’s unfrozen)
- Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow: former KJB operative, master assassin, recruited to work for S.H.I.E.L.D., now part of The Avengers and close friend to Steve.
- Sam Wilson / The Falcon / (now Captain America): formerly part of the U.S. air force, is a Counselor for veterans when he meets Steve. Sam reveals he has a “jetpack with wings” and offers to help Steve in his quest, and is called “The Falcon”. Chosen by Steve to succeed him as Captain America in “Endgame” (2019).
- Bucky Barnes / the Winter Soldier / Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes: Steve’s best friend growing up, member of the “Howling Commandoes” (Captain America’s WW2 squad), fell off a train during a mission, thought dead, brainwashed by Hydra, turned into the Winter Soldier, now has a metal arm.
- Howard Stark: Tony Stark (Iron Man’s) dad, Steve’s smart friend, CEO of Stark Industries, founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D., also made Captain America’s trade-mark shield.
- S.H.I.E.L.D.: organization dealing with supernatural / super-human / alien threats to Earth.
- The Tesseract: a blue cube that houses the “space” infinity stone, sought by Red Skull in “Captain America the First Avenger” (2011) as a power source, used by Loki in Avengers(2012) to open a portal over New York, later sought after by Thanos.
- Peggy Carter: An amazing woman. Originally from Britain, Peggy joined a special division of the U.S. army formed to take down Hydra and was involved in the Super Soldier programme, where she met Steve and they fell in love. After World War Two, Peggy became a founding member of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- Lemurian Star: pirate ship that Cap & friends are sent to rescue agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. who were being held hostage. The special USB / Hard-drive given to Steve by Fury held information that Natasha downloaded while on this ship.
- Quinjet: plane-like vehicle used by S.H.I.E.L.D., basically a jet with advanced technology.
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-2020): a series based on the Marvel comics, incorporating some events from the movies, including CATWS.
- Helicarrier: giant airship, meant to be used as weapon against people who S.H.I.E.L.D consider threats, later intended to be used against people who Hydra considers to be threats.
- Nick Fury / Nickolas J. Fury / Fury: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the person who assembled the original Avengers.
- Hydra: “the science division” of the Nazi’s created in World War Two, initially headed by Red Skull and Arnim Zola, and main antagonists for Captain America & Co. during the war. Now, hiding and working within S.H.I.E.L.D. like a parasite.
- Arnim Zola: super smart science dude working for Hydra, recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. after the war, has his brain stored on multiple hard-drive at the original S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, fosters Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D., aiding and abetting them.
