Interesting.. however
Hi Suzi, I must say the podcast was quite intriguing. It is refreshing to unshackle ourselves from the prohibitionist discourse which fosters misleading and ideological information about drugs. As such, it is pleasing and positive that you are going to release several podcasts. However, i find a few of your points quite problematic. Firstly, there is a huge conflict of interest for BigPharma to advocate legalisation. As we know, 40% of americans are in receipt of prescription drugs and, as such, the pharmeutical business is a multimillion dollar industry. On average, for every £19 spent on marketing a mere £1 is spent on research. There is an increasing corpus of research that is sheding light on medicinal cannabis ameliorating, or, in some cases, curing, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, nausea (as you mentioned). Secondly, I find the notion of some people having a 'genetic predisposition to cannabis use' deeply problematic. Is it not fundamentally social experiences that shape cannabis and drug use? Such as, adolescence-a period characterised by spontaneousness. Or, mere experimentaiton, the stress and struggle of capitalist life, the enjoyment of the high and wanting to experience different states of conciousness and so forth. Lastly, you ended it on the note that cannabis is addictive. Really? The large majority of people who use drugs, (Hari & Hart in particular alude to this), use drugs fine, and are not addicted. Indeed, some drugs, in certain social and economic contexts consumed by certain individuals, may be addictive. Looked at from this point of view, its not the drug but rather their social environment.. Nevertheless this was a good informative talk.. thanksRead full review »
