I really feel 'at home' listening to this wonderful group of people chat about issues they cover. Even when the topic gets uncomfortable, I'm instantaneously consoled by the fact that they're all coming from points of compassion. Of course, the intermittent comedy is a helpful bonus when covering such difficult subject matters. These people are heroes. They speak up for the voiceless. "Extremism" aside, so many men, women, and children suffer daily under the oppressive ideology that is Islam. Yes, of course, it's #NotAll Muslims, but ISLAM - the religion - has a distinct set of doctrinal creeds that ~1.6 billion Muslims follow to varying degrees. The false equivilancies between Christianity, etc are tiresome. It is time we get real about the ideas that many people in the Islamic world hold. Ideas about martydom, jihad, paradise, apostasy, views of infidels, etc., are DEEPLY TROUBLING! I understand the intuitive urge for many people to respond with comparisons to Christianity. Fine, IMO all dogmatic religions are a stain on humanity. Religions were, as others have stated, our first attempts at science, explaining the natural world, controlling large groups, assining agency, etc. Getting back to the constant "but Christianity..." rebuttal - Christians had their reformation beated into them over a very long time. Yes, Christianity is still lingers in US politics which is an absolute shame, but they aren't burning people alive anymore. Christianity has reformed for the better. The issue that we must tackle honestly is the fact that Islam is a younger, unreformed religion thriving in a time where we have nuclear weapons, dirty bombs, etc. Ideas of martyrdom, jihad, etc., combined with modern day weaponry, is really a disasterous mix that we must avoid. I hope the SJME podcasters voice spreads far and wide. Even if it takes generations, fine, they'll have my lifelong support. We can't let Islamic apologists go unchalleneged. We can't let them continue to lie, obfuscate, enable terrorism, and downplay the treatment of women, minorities, etc. in the Muslim world without fighting back. I don't care who you are or where you were born - there are people living in these tyrannical societies under no choice of their own, and we in the western, civilized world owe it to our fellow human beings to speak honestly about bad ideas and how to move foward in an altruistic way. Thank you Yasmine, Faisal, Ali, and Armin for the inspiration!Read full review »
