“Being a fan of all Wisecrack content, I started listening to this podcast almost as soon as it went on the air. Initially I liked it, but overtime my appreciation for the podcast started dwindling down, and now I'm serisouly considering to unsubscribe. Still, I do think it's worth checking out and I'd urge newcomers to give it a cautious try; hence the 3 stars.
There's a lot like about this podcast: the hosts are charismatic, knowledgeable, love movies, and they genuinely care about the deeper intellectual aspect of the art. I'm happy there's a podcast that attempts to do what those guys are trying to do.
There's also a lot to dislike about the podcast; and sadly it's getting to the point where the bad elements are outweighing the good ones. Such elements include:
1) Choice of movies (this is a subjective criticism, but hey, who said this review had to be objective?).
2) Too pretentious. I'm an academic myself and I get the appeal, but an argument's validity is not proportional to its complexity. The hosts (particularly Jared and Austin) unnecessarily complicate things, even when the point their trying to make is childishly simplistic.
3) Sometimes it feels as though the hosts are only there to make an argument, and use the movie as an excuse to talk about something, even when it barely relates to the movie. This makes the discussion clunky, as if each host is simply waiting their turn to monologue about something.
4) Related, on occasion the hosts will quote things out of context or incorrectly (or both), simply to make a point, whether or not it relates to the movie (eg. Godel's incompleteness theorem).”Read full review »

“I find myself continually disagreeing with all the opinions in this podcast. It’s the weirdest thing... I thought Last Jedi was an amazing break from tradition, I thought mother! was pretentious and shallow, and I thought Incredibles 2 was repetitive and said the same things as the original. I...”Read full review »
