“Austin to a large degree carries the show by being the most researched and involved in the philosophical nuances of the film at hand. But there is a lack of representation ranging from race to sexuality and most glaringly gender. A more balanced version of this podcast would have more women, people of color and queer speakers who are thoughtful and qualified about whatever film is to be discussed. A film dictated by straight white men just reads as less interesting and tone deaf in 2021.
Also, maybe in opposition to my point but really affirming another, consider rotating Greg out of the show. Although its refreshing to have the perspective of a black man his points are lazily considered and lack real thoughtfulness. His misogyny even in its subtleties bleed into the conversation in a way that feels way out of place (example: episode Incredibles 2) His passing joke about liking black women off screen for example is disappointing.
To sum this up I enjoy the show for what it’s trying to achieve, looking at film from a philosophical lens to see how the medium informs everyday society, but to be more conscious of who has a seat at the table and making sure the underrepresented voices you do invite on are qualified and researched.”
