Great features, mediocre suggestions
There's no getting around the fact that these guys are good journalists, and they rightly are proud of that fact. However, one gets the feeling that they feel the pressure that the ever-growing crowd of music critics (i.e. the countless blogs devoted to the subject) and they feel the need to continuously reaffirm their precarious position atop the taste-maker pecking order. After listening to two or three shows one can see what's coming: their reviews will consist of reacting negatively to contemporary records with good press and championing long-forgotten cult favorites or obscure regional success stories that are "like" some other band on a major label, but "doing it better" than the more successful band. This pattern undercuts what, otherwise, might be a good forum to find out about new music. That being said, their interviewing and reporting skills are top-notch and are far and away the best part of the show. I'd say listen to the first 35 minutes or so for the news and interview or feature, and then feel free to ignore the "patented buy-it, burn-it, trash-it" scale at the end.Read full review »
