“Love the child psych insight, love the pop culture, love the takes on how feminism & capitalism show up in the books. Not being trite: I always have a takeaway and it's not just the pizza toast.
Before listening to SISB, I had read two or three of the graphic novels with my 8 year old and none of the chapter books. Now I'm trying to read the chapter books after I put my kids to bed, attempting to stay ahead of the podcast. Even if I'm not caught up (I'm not), I still totally "listen ahead" to SIS. I easily glean plot and character development from the sharp & hilarious hosts.
If you want a sample of the podcast, listen to the one about "Kristy's Big Day." There is a hilariously (earnest?) analysis of why one of the characters owns 3 toaster ovens. In addition to the obvious, they cite dream boards, brand comparisons, and how toaster ovens were/weren't deserving of being at the forefront of cuisine tech back then.
Acoustics in the first few epis are not great (talking over each other, echoes, etc.), but stick with it! The audio gets better, it's always incredibly relevant to our current world (sans COVID19), and often so funny.”Read full review »
